By Dana Phillips.

The fastest way to increase sales and recruiting in my organization was to promote leaders. Once I understood that, the question became, “How do I promote leaders quickly and consistently?”

Here’s some of the things I did to inspire my team members to want to promote and make it fun. To get started, I asked myself these questions:

  • How many leaders do I want in my organization? When (for example, end of the year, end of 1Q, Conference, etc.)?
  • How many will I promote to reach that goal?
  • What makes this important to me?
  • How will I share this goal with my leaders and “paint the picture” of how promoting leaders will change their sales, income, and the lives of others?
  • What can I do to make the journey inspiring, a team effort, and FUN?

After answering these questions, get creative! Have fun making a big deal about promoting leaders consistently. Here are some ideas that kept my team engaged as we promoted more leaders and kept me excited and focused:

  • Create a visual at meetings, on Facebook, and in your newsletter. You want everyone to know the goal and progress you are making toward it. Talk about it often.
  • Find a song to play every time you have a leader promotion. It’s fun to turn it on as you begin your meeting, so everyone knows a new leader is being promoted. Coach your leaders to be excited and cheer when they hear the song. Welcome your new leaders by having them go through a “celebration arch” or having each leader give her a card welcoming her to the team.
  • Focus on inspiring people to step up to the leadership opportunity. Promoting a leader(s) at every meeting is the best inspiration for your team. Have the new leader give a 3-minute testimony as to why she wanted to be a leader, what she did to get there, and what’s her next goal. This creates inspiration and excitement for everyone. Future leaders became more determined to reach their target date, and new consultants see the opportunity and want to hear more.
  • Set up follow-through sessions. When I began doing these things at my meetings, I realized that more people were interested in hearing about leadership. I wanted to share it with them as soon as possible. So at the end of every meeting, I invited those who wanted to hear more to set a time for a leadership conversation with me. I had a clipboard with the times I had open that week, and they signed up.
  • Follow the 5-Step Promoting system to develop leaders consistently: Identify, Invite, Hold Leadership Conversations, Set Action Steps, and Follow-Up.

To stay focused on keeping the main thing the main thing, I asked myself daily, “Is what I’m doing right now promoting leaders?” If not, I stopped doing it and returned to my main thing. Enjoy!

How Are You Keeping Promoting the Main Thing?
