By Neil Phillips.

I once read that “If you were committed to something, you would stand naked in the town square and let people throw tomatoes at you to prove it.” While that sounds a bit extreme, you need to ask yourself, “How committed are you?”

An excellent place to start is to look at your calendar. What is taking up most of your time? Do your daily activities line up in a direction toward a goal or purpose? Or are they random? If they are random, you might be committed to a busy life or other people’s agendas. What do your team members see when they watch how you spend you spend your time? Do they see a vision, direction, or goal they can follow? Are you heading in a direction they want to go?

Commitment isn’t easy. It often means we must do something that is hard or that we don’t want to do. The ability to follow through with commitments is a leadership quality. Staying committed even when it’s hard sets apart the leader. What does commitment look like for a direct selling leader?

  • You believe in your company, even when the backorders pile up or the corporate leadership goes through a turnover. A leader models commitment so that their team can stay committed, too.
  • You are making one more phone call until your calendar is full so that your team can see that it is possible.
  • Supporting your people through their challenges, learning curves, and disappointments. Letting them know that you are committed to their success all the time, not just when they are on top of their game.
  • You are working your schedule, even when you don’t feel like it. Leaders are committed to a disciplined life, even in a home-based business where life is happening all around them.
  • You are showing up. Sometimes just showing up is a big commitment when life gets tough. This one demonstrates to others that you are committed.
  • Commitment means I will do what it takes to get the job done. YOU CAN COUNT ON ME!

Are you struggling with a team that is not committed? It might be that they are following a leader without a noticeable commitment. What is your commitment level? Are can you do to take it up a notch? Are you ready to stand naked in the town square and let people throw tomatoes?

Be brave.  Your team will thank you for your leadership commitment when you do!
