As a leader, I struggled for years with why my team wouldn’t take action. I spent lots of time training and sharing the secrets to my success. I knew they knew what to do, so why weren’t they doing it?

After I took time to analyze what caused me to be energized and take action, I discovered I do more when I feel empowered.  I feel most empowered when I decide what to do, when to do it and how to do it. A sense of rebellion always seems to come over me when I am told what to do…

As I explored how to help others come up with their own solutions and timelines, I discovered the wonderful art of coaching. Learning to ask questions instead of telling isn’t easy, but so worth it when you hear your people own their solutions. Here are a few examples of how to shift from telling to coaching.

TELLING

  • Have you tried, a, b, c…
  • This is what worked for me…
  • I know the solution for you…
  • This is what I do….

COACHING

  • What have you tried so far?
  • What else could you try?
  • What has worked for you so far?
  • Where could you find the answer?
  • Who do you know that is successful at that?
  • What questions could you ask them?

Learning to ask empowering questions changed not only my team; it changed my life. What questions will uncover the real potential in your team? Go ahead and list them in the comments. Come back and create a list of everyone’s best questions. Keeping a list of questions posted on your desk is a great way to begin the shift from telling your people to coaching your team.
