By Dana Phillips.

I learned a long time ago that being around positive people was more fun than staying around those who are negative. As I began my direct selling business, I also noticed that positive people had more energy and success and could always look on the bright side of any situation. Their positiveness was contagious, and I decided I wanted to learn how to have a positive attitude as they did. Developing a positive attitude has helped me in all areas of my life. Whether it’s business, family, or personal, a positive attitude helps me cope easier with daily living. I’m more optimistic about everything, and it helps me not worry about things totally out of my control (which is just about everything).

My most crucial shift was to choose to be positive. Yes, it is a matter of choice and takes learning and focusing on how to do it.

Here are some things that help me keep a strong positive attitude. I’ve learned to:

  • Ignore negative thoughts. I do my best to substitute them with positive, happy thoughts immediately.
  • Visualize what I do want to happen, not what I don’t want to happen. (Why think about what we don’t want to happen?)
  • Make sure I have a circle of happy friends who have the same positive mindset as I do.
  • Stop listening to the news and all the chatter around it. It’s hard to stay positive when letting so much negativity into my mind.
  • Watch shows that make me happy and listen to uplifting music.
  • Find reasons to smile more often and at others, especially when I’m out and about.
  • Having a regular exercise schedule as it keeps me feeling positive about myself.
  • Have faith in myself and believe that God has a plan for me.
  • Read at least one page of an inspiring book every day. For me, it’s having a devotional time every morning and reading the Bible. I’ve found it to be positive, inspirational, and an excellent daily beginning.

Deciding to become a positive person has changed my life. Mastering my thoughts, changing them from negative to positive, has given me the strength to tackle life’s challenges. And every challenge I’ve overcome has become another learning experience on my life’s journey.
