By Dana Phillips.

Now and then, we all need to examine our attitudes and our conversations. If we are having a bad day, a bad week, a bad month, it can be very easy to “tell it like it is.”

Unfortunately, there is a very fine line between honesty and complaining. The line is defined by the motivations, our attitudes if you will. If you are saying it in love, to encourage, or to praise those around you, it probably won’t come across as brutal. If it is said to get sympathy, criticize others, mock those less fortunate, or make yourself look better, it can be so destructive.

I’m not talking about being phony when you are having a bad day; I am talking about changing your attitude when things aren’t going your way.

Here are some examples of inappropriate statements, even if they might be true.

I can’t believe how (choose one: picky, whiny, mean, stupid, poorly dressed) So-and-so was.

I am so sick of these people who book a party and stiff me.

Conference calls are so dull and so long. Why do they have to…..(choose one: recognize some people so much, take so much time talking about recruiting, make announcements).

I don’t think anyone is having a good month. I talked to everyone and they are in the same boat as me.

It only takes one rotten apple to spoil the bunch.

It only takes one infection to ravage a body.

It only takes one rumor to ruin a reputation.

It takes a team to build others.

Leaders lift others.

One unsolicited act of kindness may save someone’s day.

One word of encouragement may make a difference.

Watch your attitude and watch your words.  Others are watching you.
