If you have been awake in the last ten years you have heard the phrase “don’t major in the minors.”

The phrase reminds me of a few minutes I spent on our back porch a while back. One stinking mosquito could run a beautiful evening.  He (or she) kept buzzing around my head. I could hear the little pest buzzing, quiet, and buzzing.  For the life of me, I could not concentrate on what Neil was saying.  And truth be told, he doesn’t bare his soul on our back porch on a regular basis.  Try as I might, I majored in the minors.  I focused on the mosquito until Neil got up and left.

Don’t major in the minors!  It is so easy to get caught up in the little stuff. What does it mean to major in the minors in our business?

Miss the big picture. I have seen some incredible competent leaders lose sight of their focus, mission, and even ethics to make a contest goal.

Do things right vs. Do the right things.  Doing things right is like order entry, creating a fabulous meme, and making sure you email everyone the latest updates.  Doing the right things is making sure the sales, recruiting and leadership development happens first.  Many of my clients will attest to the need to stay centered on doing the right things.

Often the minors are the pesky mosquito, not the storm.  Sometimes you can get almost obsessed with the minor things: things like consultants who don’t call you back, individuals who always correct you, explaining and re-explaining programs and product benefits.

What are the major things you know about your business?

  • Recruit, sell, and teach others
  • Work with new and those who are matching your effort
  • Inspire team members
  • Promote more leaders

Duh, right? It isn’t that you don’t know what is important, it is a problem of staying focused on the important thing.

So here is a guaranteed way to major in the majors. Start NOW and do this for a week and I promise you will be more productive than you have been for weeks, maybe months, maybe ever.

ASK one question every time you change activities. Is this a “major” in my business? If it isn’t, don’t do it until you have done at least one activity that is a major.

That’s it.

Simple.
