If you were challenged to go out and personally sell $10,000 next week, you would be hard-pressed to do it.  Even if you were offered double your normal commission, you probably couldn’t do it.

If you were challenged to go out and sell $10,000 during the second week of June, you could make it happen.

The biggest difference between these two situations is WHAT you do before you start selling.  If it’s next week, you don’t have much chance to plan any strategy.  You have to jump in and take what you can get.

For June, you have time to get things in order—bookings, invitations, incentives, etc. You can boost your work in May so you can date into June. You can even plan things for “business insurance” in case of bad weather or June blahs.

Metaphorically, you are running two different races.  To sell next week, you are starting from a dead stop.  You have to work to get to full speed.  For June, you have a running start and are at full speed much quicker.

The world’s record holder for the men’s 100-meter dash is Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, whose record time is 9.58 seconds.  Usain Bolt also holds the world record for the fastest anchor in the 4 x 100-meter relay.  His time in the relay, with a running start, is 8.70 seconds.

You can start June by standing still or by having a running start.  Which do you prefer?
