How often do you get the “My Way or the Highway” mood going?  Do you ever whine to your spouse about how “NOBODY IS (fill in the blank.)”

As direct selling leaders, you sometimes feel powerless to get your team on the move. As a leader, you will sometimes engage in counterproductive actions spurred on by your frustration at not getting your way.

The truth about a direct selling team is that they are all volunteers. They don’t ‘have to do anything they don’t want to. The only way to engage them and get them moving is with leadership, and leadership requires influence.  According to John Maxwell, “The true measure of leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.” Grow your influence, and you will see your team begin to move. Here are some practical ways to grow your influence:

  • Give yourself a character check-up. Do you do what you are asking your team to do? Do they see your integrity in all you do?
  • Who do you follow? Make a list of all the reasons you follow this person. How can you do more of what influences you?
  • Look for a leader in your company whose team is growing and engaging. Ask them if they would be willing to mentor you. Be sure to offer something in return. I know people who have flown across the county to spend a day in the office of someone who inspires them.
  • Ask your team what they look for in a leader and who they admire in your company.
  • Honestly, care for your people. When they know you care, they will forgive many mistakes as you grow as a leader.

If you think you’re leading and no one is following you, then you’re only taking a walk.

Be sure you are never walking alone; influencers have followers.
