Think about the greatest team you’ve ever been on. It may have been a sports team, debate team, dance team, work team, or other team. What was it about that team that set it apart from others? What I’ve learned is that leaders who create a positive environment and have fun are more likely to build great teams.

Why it’s important to have fun as a leader?

Leaders who are fun are easy to follow. They make the job look easy and inspire others to want to become leaders. They create a fun, energized environment that engages team members to be a part of it.

A leader who builds community allows team members to build relationships, have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime. All of this creates longevity on your team. Think of things you can do with your team to celebrate successes.

Having fun as a leader begins with you.  Do you love what you do? When you love it, you are naturally happy. Be a role model, show your enthusiasm, have a smile for everyone you greet, and be energetic.

Summertime is a fun time!  Set a goal to create a smile for everyone on your team this week. You may not be successful, but your efforts to create a positive atmosphere will be noticed.  You may get some groans, and that’s okay.  Your team members are noticing and will wonder what you will do next!

When I wasn’t having fun, I wasn’t a fun leader for my team. When this happened, I had to look within myself and figure out what was going on.  Usually, I was doing things I didn’t enjoy very much, i.e., spending too much time on administration and not enough time with people. I wasn’t having fun other times because I wasn’t focused on the fun activities, holding parties, recruiting new consultants, and promoting leaders. I’d have to make the changes to bring the fun back.

When you intentionally have fun as a leader, you will affect the lives of others around you and make a difference for them. You’ll be creating your legacy.
