Your system is in place. You and your future leader have created an action plan and agreed that it would work. Your future seems eager and ready to do what it takes to get promoted. You’re excited to have your first contact call, and when you ask her, “What happened when you made your calls yesterday.” You get the answer, “I didn’t have time; something came up.” So another day goes by, and her promotion seems more and more unlikely. She’s getting discouraged, and so are you.

Has this ever happened to you? We’ve all gone through this scenario, probably more than once.  In fact, at one time, I was the consultant who gave those excuses.

Now you’re asking: How do I handle someone who says they want to promote and doesn’t do anything about it? Here are three things to do to help you figure it out.

  1. Reach-In – Look within and ask yourself:
    • Did we set a target date?
    • Did I know her what and why?
    • Did I get permission to lead her through the promotion process?
    • Did we set an intentional work schedule?
    • Did we make an action plan together?
    • Did we make a list of prospects together?
    • Did I give her a script to use to set up three-way calls with me?
    • Did we set time to work together on recruiting by doing three-way calls?
    • Did I tell her “what” to do, or did I show her “how” to do it?
    • Did we schedule daily check-ins?
  1. Reach Out – Find out what’s going on
    • Ask Questions – Don’t assume anything!
    • Clarify the “what and why.”
    • Have a “heart to heart” conversation – is this still what she wants?
  1. Reset the action plan
    • Clarify the expectations of the partnership
    • Let her know how much you believe in her
    • Schedule daily contacts – 5 minutes
    • Believe in yourself that you can support her to reach her goals
    • Trust the Process – if she does the work, it will happen

When you set your future leaders up for success, have fun along the journey and build a good relationship, you’ll find that work gets done and promotions happen!
