Has this happened to you? You look at your team, then you look at your sales results, and then you realize that your team isn’t working.

As a new leader, the first time this happened to me, I was devastated. “How could my team do this to me after everything I was doing for them?” I jumped for the first solution that worked in the past. I thought, “They need more training.” So I ramped up the training schedule. As you might guess, that didn’t work. They were trained, and more training would not get them working.

Now I had to look at myself. Now it was time to figure out what was going on. I learned early on that when I was pointing my finger at something or someone, three fingers were pointing back to me. What was I doing or not doing? What was different?

First of all, I wasn’t having any FUN! The fun for me was working with people who wanted more from the business. I realized that I’d gotten way off track. I was trying too hard to push people to do what I wanted them to do and had stopped focusing on finding new prospects who wanted the opportunity. It wasn’t fun to be pushing all the time.

Second, I realized that I needed to regroup to find those who did want more. It was time to clarify the “what and whys” of those I was working with to find out if they wanted to move forward. If not, that was ok; I could let them go. I began focusing on finding more prospects to share the opportunity with. That meant doing more recruiting interviews and leadership conversations. It’s funny how the fun returns when we build the people.

Nothing is more gratifying than connecting with those who want more and helping them get it! I’m thankful that God gave me this mission every day in my life.

I learned that finding a way to be grateful through the ups and downs of our business is important. It keeps us on track with what we love and focused on the actions that make that happen.
