Sound like the familiar dialog in your home? Keeping track of your things and responsibilities doesn’t need to be challenging. The answer lies in one simple secret: “Like Attracts Like.”
My professional organizer friend, Kathy, taught me a straightforward principle when she came to spend the day in my office. The first thing she did was put all the office supplies on the same shelf. Duh, you say. Well, it just wasn’t that obvious to me. The envelopes fit well in the file drawer, the pencils in the desk drawer, and the paper on the shelf. As you put things away, it all starts to make sense. Once you experience living with all the office supplies on one shelf, you will be amazed! You never had to hunt for the paper clips again. Stack the paper beside the copier and printer, not on the shelf across the room. Every time you save five steps retrieving paper, you save time! By the way, “Like Attracts Like” works great in the kitchen and garage, too!
Adding “Like Attracts Like” to your calendar will be life-changing. When you begin grouping all the like activities and scheduling time for them, you will be awe-struck at the time you saved. You also can learn to organize the grouped activities in the time slots they ‘liked’ the best. Things that took lots of brainpower were my most productive time in the morning. You schedule your phone calls when you are most likely to connect. For example, you can create an entire team culture around Sunday evening hostess coaching calls.
Here is an example of what a Direct Selling Leader’s 20-hour work week might look like when scheduled according to “Like Attracts Like.”
Fill in your calendar by adding “Like Attracts Like” home, life, and family activities. Go ahead, pile up the carpools all in one day; you will be in the car anyway. Find yourself sitting and waiting during band or soccer practice? Look at your list of errands; which ones are nearby? You can make your grocery run at the store near the piano teacher, not your home!
