The hardest job for any leader?  Being inspiring.

You can plan what you want to say and do, and you are never sure it ever touches your consultant right. You do your best to be inspiring and end up learning from your mistakes anyway.

Inspiration is an external force, and as a leader, you’ll want to create a culture of inspiration.  There are many ways to do this.

Have you ever thought about the difference between inspiration and motivation? You may have heard it before “you can’t motivate anyone to do anything.”  That’s because motivation comes from within and is deeply connected to a person’s what and why.  Once someone is clear about their what and why, it becomes the driving force of their motivation.  When you keep them connected to their what and why, they will stay motivated.

Here are three ways to inspire that you may want to try.

Celebrate Often!  Celebrate success when your team members make their goals and remind them of their why.  Celebrate new leader promotions and all leaders who move to the next level.  Create some promotion celebration traditions that inspire everyone to want to promote.  Celebrate with special music, powerful leadership testimonies, gifts and challenges that reward all who promote out by a certain date.  You can reward them with a special gift or luncheon.

Create Dream Boards.  This is a fun activity to do at your leader meeting or workshop. I’ve even workeded with people doing it on Zoom.  It’s inspiring when they begin the year with clarity and pictures of what they want to accomplish for the year.  Have each one share what their dream board means to them and why.  Follow up one-to-one with each and talk to them about their what and why.  When you are both clear about it and you keep them connected to it, great things can happen.

Cast the vision of leadership often.  Paint your team members in the picture.  Share their success qualities and tell them why you think they will be a great Leader.  Share the benefits of leadership at every meeting or conference call.  Keep it simple and do it often.  Invite those who show interest to schedule a leadership connection with you to hear more about it.

Remember, inspiring others is what you do… becoming an inspiration is who you are.
