It took me a long time to realize the importance of alone time.  With a busy business and family, I didn’t have time for alone time. I loved the action and energy of being with people. So, I was out holding parties, doing sponsoring interviews, holding meetings, being at games and events for the kids, shopping, and doing anything but being alone. Many successful leaders I knew were scheduling alone time to re-energize themselves and plan their business. It was a great idea, and I knew it worked for others. Finding time to do it for me didn’t happen.

As my business grew and I developed as a leader, I wanted to do some things differently.  Two things I thought would make a difference were to find time to re-energize myself and to make a solid plan for my business and calendar. It was time to “quit flying by the seat of my pants.” Here’s the plan I followed to create time for myself.

First, I knew that starting my day with the right attitude was key, so I scheduled my morning devotional time.  It always gives me energy and inspiration.

Second, I needed uninterrupted time to plan the vision for my business and what I wanted to do to make it happen. I found the library to be a great place to have uninterrupted planning time. You can create a vision, write training, prepare for meetings, make meal plans, or plan a family vacation. Take your laptop, turn off your phone, and you’ll find that you can get a lot more done in less time without the distractions at home.

Third, I needed to really work my calendar to made everything happen. I’d been blocking my calendar and sometimes didn’t pay attention to it or let some things slide without being done. To keep a strong calendar, I had to plan for more alone time. At the beginning of the month, I filled in everything that had a definite date and time. I added new appointments and events as scheduled and took time each day to review them and make my plan for the day.

I love my alone time now. It helps me stay centered each day. Planning for the week, month, and even the year has made life so much more organized.  Best of all, I get much more done.

I’ve heard it said, “You’ve got to slow down to go fast.” Slowing down to have alone time made a huge difference for me.
