By Neil Phillips.

Look around. Seventy percent of the people you work with are either not engaged or actively disengaged. Gallup polls are consistently showing numbers like this, and have for the last decade. In direct sales, it’s easy to say that these numbers “really don’t fit” our profession. You are leading a volunteer army that wants to be here.

But what if the numbers did fit your team? If you open your eyes to this possibility, you have an excellent opportunity to make a difference.

Here’s how:

How long does it take someone to start and then leave? That’s a measure of disengagement for you.

  • Are you holding good coaching calls with them about their why, their what, and their how? Coaching engages every part of your team member. They feel heard, self-responsible, supported, and accountable.
  • Do your new consultants have a clear path to advance with roles, responsibilities, and accountability?
  • How are you helping them engage with someone? When your new recruit has a recruit of her own, it generates terrific excitement.

Do your new leaders hit their mark and then fade? That’s a measure of disengagement for you.

  • Are you supporting them in setting their next goal? When you hit a goal, your motivation changes. This is your coaching opportunity to revisit the why, the what, and what’s next.
  • New leaders require new skills and habits. Are you coaching them to discover their knowledge gaps? How are they doing on time management and balance issues?

Does your profession still excite you? Is it possible that you are becoming silently disengaged and don’t realize it?

  • Are you finding more and more reasons not to work with your sales team? A coach might support you in seeing how your values have changed and what you want to do about it.
  • How will you find your next challenge? You didn’t get to the top by accident. Use a coach to help you discover your next mountain.

You are getting ready to start a new year. Are you willing to make it a fresh start in your business? Finding ways to engage as a coach may be your most significant opportunity at this time. How will you approach this bigger game?
