By Dana Phillips.

As I get ready to answer this question, I think back to the beginning of my sales career and what I wish I had known.

I was a late bloomer in my direct selling company. As a young mother with children, I let life get in my way when booking parties and had no desire to recruit or build a team. As my first year ended, I had nothing to show for the little effort I’d put in and decided it was time to quit.

As the new year began, my leader retired, and I was transferred to another team with a new leader. What a difference! The minute she met me, she started talking about me promoting to leader, she invited me to hear the information, and we set a target date (remember, I was quitting). She was cheerful and enthusiastic about me promoting, and I got caught up in her vision. She walked with me every step of the way showing me how to do the activities, talking to me every day or so, and training me all simultaneously. With her support, I was promoted on my target date and already had my next goal set. I wanted a big, booming business just like hers.

Looking back now, I wish I had known from the beginning the benefits of becoming a leader, building a team, and how much fun it was. I wish I had known how fulfilling it was to change my life and help others do the same. I wish I had known someone saw my potential and believed I could do it.

I’m so thankful I didn’t quit when I wanted to. Even though I didn’t learn these things during my first year in business, it wasn’t too late to put what I was learning into action…remembering the importance of having passion, enthusiasm, and FUN! Inviting everyone, even new consultants, to hear about what becoming a leader could look like for them. And sharing how much I believed in them.

I often think about what my life would have looked like if I had quit after the first year and never took the opportunity that was being offered. We all have an opportunity that changes lives. Share it!
