How many times have you heard “the fortune is in the follow-up?”  This is true in all aspects of our business, and especially in working with future leaders.  Once your future leader and you create the action plan, your job switches to guiding a future leader to success. Your belief, guidance, and knowledge will make the difference in her success. Here are four tips for creating your follow-up system:

1. Schedule weekly calls.

  • When the weekly action steps are agreed on, schedule a 30-minute call each week at a definite time to coach around these actions.
  • On these calls, you’ll want to stay focused on what she achieved, what obstacles she faced, and what she’ll do differently the next week.
  • Complete another action list together for the upcoming week.

2. Stay in touch often during the week. When developing a future leader, you need more follow-up than once-a-week coaching calls.  Be sure you open up all communication lines to stay in touch. Some leaders we work with use a 5-minute daily check-in.

  • Quick phone calls during the week allow her to share an idea or you to congratulate her on something going well in her business. Even if it’s a voice mail, she’s heard your voice.
  • Email and text to celebrate a new team member or activities with which she’s having success.
  • Send handwritten notes sharing your belief in her and letting her know how much you’re looking forward to her promotion.
  • Catch her doing something right and let her know right away that you noticed.

3. Keep track. You’ll want to know your future leader’s business as well as you know your own.

  • Please keep track of the names of leads she’s following up with for sponsoring and booking. Ask specifically, “What did Mary say when you invited her to be a Consultant?”  “How did Sara like the idea of being one of your June Hosts?”
  • Put the dates and times of her parties/appointments on your team calendar and follow-up to help her identify sponsoring leads.
  • Know what her sales are at any given time during the month and keep them in front of her by texting, emailing, or quick phone calls.
  • Please keep track of any new Consultants, and be sure you are modeling how to set them up for Fast Start.

4. Keep believing in her. She will have many doubts during her journey to Leadership. The closer contact you have, then the sooner you’ll help her overcome them and move forward. You will need to continue to remind her of her strengths and how much you believe in her. Always remember, the fortune is in the follow-up!
