You know that the team members who get off to a strong start stay longer, sell more, and move up faster.  The word choices you use make a difference because new people are looking for direction.

Here are a couple of examples of word choices that are good vs. better:

Available vs. Scheduled

“I am available to help you anytime you need me.”

“I want to schedule a time to work with you because I believe in you and I want to guarantee you have the tools you need to succeed.”

Optional vs. Direction

“You are in business for yourself, so you can do whatever you want when you want.”

“Because you are in business for yourself, and I believe in you, my responsibility is to give you the next steps so you can act now and be successful.”

I read a great leadership article the other day on the Inc blog.  As I read it, I thought about how these words are powerful to use to engage your new people.

YOU: Who doesn’t want to know what is in it for them?  Using YOU reminds YOU that what your new team member needs (not what you need) is the message that will resonate with them.

NOW: People think about five years from now. They ACT on things NOW. Using NOW creates urgency and sets the tone for success.

BECAUSE: The word BECAUSE begins to connect the dots for anyone. It gives the reason for your direction, and that is what adult learners want.

ACT: Using ACT as much as possible translates ideas to movement. ACT NOW is powerful because it gives the next step.

GUARANTEE: We avoid “GUARANTEE” because of product or income claims, right? Well, you can guarantee your commitment, your effort, and your belief. When you GUARANTEE sincerely, it works because it comes from your heart.

BELIEVE: This should probably be the first one. If you don’t BELIEVE that every new person could be successful, you are in the wrong business because you won’t imagine them as successful.  Don’t get me wrong, not all will be successful, but as a leader, you want to create an environment for all to succeed.

IMAGINE: Because people often think in pictures, using IMAGINE often takes your new team members to the creative part of their brain.  What is so important about that? Fear, dread, and worry are in the back of the brain (I know that this is a simplification, but I guarantee if you look it up you will find it is true).

As you craft your statements, messages, texts and emails to new people, remember these seven power words.  I believe that you have the power to get people to act because you want to guarantee creating an environment of success. Now imagine yourself as the leader who is known for getting people off to a great start. Congratulations, it is YOU.
