I have been reading many stories (over Zoom) to my almost 18-month-old grandson and any other grandkids who can make it. What a blast! I am beginning to speak fluent Seuss (I know you can book, if only you look, for the one who says “Yay” when you ask her to stay). I came across the story of the ant and the grasshopper. You remember the story. Please don’t make me reread it.

Like the grasshopper, many of you may have had a leisurely fun-filled summer, and now, at the beginning of September, you are beginning to twitch. Some of you had a steady, busy summer, and your pipeline of customers is brimming with new prospects, your datebook is full of parties, and you have a solid start to the fall selling season. Others are wondering where to start.

The good news is that it is never too late to get going in our profession. It begins with a decision to be proactive, not reactive. Think about the distinction model below.

Reactive Proactive
Making sure all email is caught up to date Scheduling time for email in off hours
Rescuing a consultant who could be “so good.” Spending time sharing with new prospective consultants
Spending time filing Investing time with new or emerging leaders
Waiting to see what your company’s next incentive will be Planning your fall action plan
Scrambling because someone from the home office is coming Scheduling your next big events in advance and asking the home office person to attend

I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. In the words of my grandson, “Be the ant.”   Proactive always wins the race.
