One of my favorite Aesop’s fables, the ant and the grasshopper, comes to mind this time of year. If you are in direct sales, it’s easy to live like a grasshopper right now.  Your company has primed everything to make sales easy in the fall season.  And your customers are buying like crazy. And your short term income needs are being met. And complacency becomes the word of the day.  In short, you become a grasshopper.

We all know what happens to the grasshopper. Times become lean and the grasshopper, who hasn’t prepared, is left struggling.

This is the time to start thinking and working on January.  There are three indisputable reasons.

Your team is excited.  Can you name any other time of year that your team is so excited about business? The depth and breadth of the success stories are drowning you. This is a BLUE SKY time of year.  There are some months when your team members are more concerned about needs than about their wants.  Right now, they want even more success than they are holding.  You hold the key to their future beyond 2014.  Don’t let them fizzle out in December.

December will be a solid month.  For most direct sellers, the December selling season ends at mid-month.  By starting now, December can be a full sales month during those first couple of weeks.  A few days ago, I shared a story about Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man who can run 100 meters faster with a running start than when coming out of the blocks.  If you want a great January, then December is the month you get up to speed. The better you make December, then the better that January is going to be.

You grow your capacity.  This is your chance to believe in yourself and your leadership. That belief will get you started.  Sharing your vision, planning now, and executing key strategies and tactics are the major ingredients in creating a great January sales month.  When you’ve done it once, you can do it again and again. Your capacity to be a leader grows with you.  Until you make the commitment, you’re being like that grasshopper.  Once you make the commitment and put all the pieces together, you grow into the leader that’s within you.

You were born to win, but to be a winner you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win.
