Balancing your business and your family life is always a topic that comes up for successful direct sellers.  The first thing I learned was to change my picture of balance.  If you have a good picture in mind, you can hold that image as you move towards excellence.

The Spinning Plates: Picturing yourself spinning all the activities in your life is a typical picture.  The problem is that in our business, the plates don’t keep spinning very long.  If we recruit a bunch of people and then spend time training them, the recruiting plate crashes.  This picture of crashing plates was not the one that made me feel peaceful.

The Tightrope:  The picture of me balancing on a tightrope was a little better.  To stay on the rope, I have to keep my eye on the destination and not look down. The problem is the wind: when unforeseen circumstances “blow” into my life, and I fall off. The thought of me inching forward and concentrating on not falling created even more stress than the Spinning Plates.

The Scale of Justice:  Balancing things on two sides sounded great at first.  Then I realized that the picture of the scales was static. That kind of balance had no movement.  Not for me.

The Maestro:  Seeing my life as directing a symphony was a new picture of balance for me. There would be harmony. Parts of my “orchestra” might not be playing perfectly, but no one would notice those mistakes.  I see this balance as dynamic, ever-changing, and yet flowing.  Yes, this is the picture I want to keep of balance.

What is the picture you want to hold when you think of balance?  Stop for a few moments, close your eyes, and visualize what you want from your business and life.  Let me know your thoughts.  This is part one of a three-part series.  Watch for more entries on this topic next week.
