What frightens you about recruiting? Nothing? Great! You need to read this to understand the other 95% of direct sellers who are afraid of recruiting.
You are afraid of recruiting. Keep reading. Most direct sellers are just like you. You are scared to recruit.
- I am afraid people will think I am pushy.
- I hate hearing “no.”
- I am afraid people won’t like me.
- I am afraid I don’t know enough about our business.
- I am afraid my new people won’t succeed.
- I am afraid I won’t find the “right” people.
- I am afraid that we will saturate our market.
- I am afraid I can’t convince people to join my team.
Stop right there.
- Recruiting isn’t about you.
- You don’t have to convince anyone to sign up.
- You need to talk to enough people to find those who are a good fit.
With that in mind, let’s take another look at the top fears. I am not trying to be glib, just presenting a different point of view that has helped others like you.
I am afraid people will think I am pushy. If you stop trying to convince people and tell them you want to tell them about your company, you aren’t pushy. “Pushy” is not taking a “no.” Pushy is trying to get someone to do something they don’t want to do.
I hate hearing “no.” So you would be fine if everyone said yes? Stop making it about you. They are not saying “no” to you; they are saying no to an idea.
I am afraid people won’t like me. Again, you are making this about you. People will still like you if you are sincere, not convincing, and remind them that you will still like THEM if they say no.
I am afraid I don’t know enough about our business. The law of ONE MORE says you have been in business one more week, month, or hour than the person you are recruiting. You will never know everything about the business.
I am afraid my new people won’t succeed. It isn’t your responsibility to make someone succeed.
I am afraid I won’t find the “right” people. Oh, this one is scary. There are 15 million people in direct sales in the US alone. There is not a “right” person.
I am afraid that we will saturate our market. This thinking assumes that you and everyone you recruit will be selling seven days a week, eight hours a day. It is so difficult to saturate a market. I will tell you a story in my next blog post.
I am afraid I can’t convince people to join my team. You are right; you can’t. So enjoy inviting people to look at your business to see if it is a good fit for them and if they are a good fit for your business.

I’ve had growth in my business since starting coaching with Dana. My recruits nearly doubled in the first year of coaching, and this past year saw about the same number of personal recruits. What I’m most excited about is that my team recruiting grew by 148% from the previous year, and my team volume by 23%, which means so did my income. I also was the #1 point earner (first time ever) for our incentive trip to Japan. ~Kathryn S.
