What DO top leaders forget? Here are the top three things that top leaders forget until things start to go wrong.
First, top leaders forget to ask, “What do you want?” Whether it’s someone brand new or another leader on your team, if you don’t ask what they want, then your sales will slide. They’ll start to think they work for the team, which undercuts their motivation. If your team is vested in what they want, they’ll work harder.
Second, watch your mouth. As a leader, you become so immersed in your sales jargon that you forget not everyone speaks that language. You’ll confuse them, and you’ll lose effectiveness in your interviews. This issue is what leads to being called “too salesy.”
Third, you forget to explain the process. You know what it takes to get to the top. And to help others, you do the “go get a recruit,” “book three parties,” or “get in front of 3 people this week.” You know the big hunks to get results. Help your other leaders, near leaders, consultants, and prospects understand the chunks and bites to get the results.
