Learning to build people by bringing out the best in them is the difference between being a leader and being a great leader.  I was fortunate to have a great leader as a role model for me.  Here are three ways that you can continue to find the best in others.

Recognize and praise.  Both public and private recognition are essential in building people.  You want to catch them doing something right and be specific in praising them right away.  Rather than saying “you’re doing great,” say “you’re doing great because you’re so consistent in holding recruiting conversations,” or “you are a natural at helping people understand how much they’ll gain from  joining our business.”

Praise generously and sincerely.  Find success qualities (enthusiasm, persistence, ambition, or dedication) in everyone around you and regularly acknowledge these qualities.  Write notes to let others know what you see in them and how much you appreciate them.

Be a talent scout and look for potential.  To spot talent, you have to pay attention.  You have to look for the tiniest clues and be curious enough to pursue them.  The more you pay attention, the more talent you will find.  Look for potential everywhere.  Instead of only seeing who a person is now, see who this person can become.

Be open-minded.  Many of the most talented people you meet will be different than you.  They will think differently, act differently, and talk differently.  Your greatest challenge is to see past yourself to find the spark of potential inside them.

You want to succeed, right? Well, the fastest way to do this is to do what you do best and get others to do what they do best.  After all, it is much easier to bring out the best in others if they are doing what they do best.

Be persistent and never give up.

People will get discouraged and distracted.  They may come to rely on you to do the heavy lifting.  This is normal because it takes time to discover one’s abilities.  It also takes time to accept responsibility for one’s outcomes.  You can help others, but it is not your role to do all the work for them.  With persistence, you can let them know that they have talent burning inside them, and you can bring it out if you are willing to put in the extra effort.

The core of successful leadership is bringing out the best in others.  It will make a difference on your team in 2015.
