When my children were young (very young) one of their favorite cartoon shows was “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.”  While I think the main purpose of the show was to sell toys, it was a fun distraction, the good guys won and He-Man’s shout became immortalized, “I HAVE THE POWER.”  Since then, She-Ra realized she has the power and a whole new generation of toy buyers have emerged.

Direct sellers have a power.  You have the power to sell.  Your company may be better at marketing, rolling through big numbers, designing products, publishing catalogs, and creating marketing plans.  HOWEVER, you have a power that your company will probably never get.  Your company doesn’t sell; it markets.  You have the power of sales.

While sales and marketing are related, they aren’t the same.  HubSpot says this:

“What’s the difference between sales and marketing?

Marketing informs and attracts leads and prospects to your company and product or service. Sales, on the other hand, works directly with prospects to reinforce the value of the company’s solution to convert prospects into customers.”

You get the people side of the business. For you, your customers are more than a number or a marketing plan.  You know each one as an individual.  You start to see the world through their eyes and how your product and opportunity fit in it.  You get to make a difference in their lives.

Facebook is a great opportunity for you to get to know people.  Leave the marketing to your company.  You want to find people.  Here are three quick suggestions.

First, comment.  Like’s and love’s and those other Facebook emoji’s are a nothing burger.  If someone’s post touches you, comment.  They will see your name when you comment.  They won’t look for the names of emoji people.

Second, join groups.  Facebook wants groups to be the core of interactions.  So lean into it.  Join groups.  Find groups of people who are your ideal customer.  Are they young moms? Retirees? Health lovers?  Find those people, join them, and be polite (lots and lots of politeness is important).

Third, less marketing and more selling.  You are a seller.  You sell by discovering what prospects want and letting them know how your solutions fit their needs.  You work best with the individual. So listen, learn, engage in conversations and messaging.  Let your company focus on marketing.

The next time you get frustrated with your company, go in the bathroom, look in the mirror, raise your hand and shout, “I HAVE THE POWER OF SELLING!”  You’ll feel much better.
