When you are working with people and want to build them, these three little tips will not fail you.  I have shared these three tips with lots of people who have told me that they have served them well.

  1. Build them face to face.  Say good things to them personally. Affirm their strengths privately.  Use notes, phone calls, or BTW conversations to build them.  “By the way, have I told you lately that your analytical mind really impresses me?”
  2. Build them in front of others.  Say good things about them in front of others.  This could be in a meeting or in a conversation where another person is there.  “Dave, don’t you just love Deb’s resilience?  She really handles adversity well.”
  3. Build them when they aren’t around.  This one is powerful for two reasons.  You are building them in your mind, and good news travels back to the person you are discussing.  “Deb really shows a lot of patience, doesn’t she?  I admire that about her?”

So there you are: three quick ways to build others.  What do you think?
