By Dana Phillips.
When I was a little girl, my mother taught me the old saying, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest ’til your good is better and your better is best.”
I have no idea where Mama learned this quote, but she was adamant that it became part of our DNA. With the power of my good search engine friend, Google, I discovered the phrase is attributed to St. Jerome, often called the Father of the Latin Bible. I can’t find the context for his saying, but I can attest to the power of his words.
What are you good at doing? Think about your strengths in your business, home, relationships, how you organize your time and space, and emotional intelligence. Do a “good” inventory and work on being better.
It takes less energy to go from “good” to “better” than to fix your faults. Let me give you an example. I am not a neat, organized person. I work at home and have many stacks of paper. I am not “good” at neatness. I am good at getting things done. If it is on my calendar, I have the integrity to finish the task. So I want to get “better” at getting things done, not being neat. If my messes get in the way of my results, it is easier to make my “good” get ‘er done behaviors “better,” so I set time to file, trash, and act on my messes. Since I have been doing that for years, I am “better” at getting things done. I keep working every day to be my best at my strengths.
Don’t focus on what you are not good at. Hire someone to do it, or use your other strengths to compensate!
We are good at some things, we can get better, and if we are determined to grow in our personal and professional lives, we will never stop growing until we are our best. And then, what most of us discover, there is room to grow again!
Consciously looking for ways to improve does not deprive us of the moment’s joy. As an entrepreneur, it calls us not to a destination but a journey.
