By Dana Phillips.

As a brand new leader in my company, the last thing on my mind was promoting a new leader from my team. I had been a leader for a month when my up-line, Rebecca, came to my team meeting. She immediately identified Mary, a new consultant, and told me she could be my first promote out. She shared with me why Mary would make a good leader and even talked to her about it. By the time the meeting was over, Mary was excited about promoting and had even set a target date! I couldn’t believe it! How could I promote Mary when she was brand new, and so was I? I didn’t know what to do to help Mary be promoted.

Because Rebecca had set this up, I thought for sure she would take over and get Mary promoted while I watched and learned how. I found out soon enough that she would be mentoring me, and I was going to get the job done. Really? I didn’t even know how to lead my team, much less show someone else how to build one.

Rebecca stuck with me like glue, as she did while I was working to be a leader. We talked daily with her mentoring me on what to do next and holding me accountable for my actions. We had 5-minute check-in calls every day until the day we celebrated Mary’s promotion. Yes, it was exhilarating, and I couldn’t believe I had my first promotion out so soon!

What did I learn about promoting from Rebecca? I learned how to identify future leader prospects, saw how to conduct leadership conversations, and the importance of setting target dates. I also learned not to wait to talk about becoming a leader, especially with new consultants. By working closely with my future leaders and staying focused on their target date, we could make promotions happen sooner rather than later.

I know Rebecca could have promoted Mary herself, with me watching and learning along the way. Instead, she equipped me to promote leaders. I am grateful to her for taking the time to mentor me and ensuring I learned this critical leadership skill.

It became the foundation of my success in direct selling.
