“If you want to change your team, change your team,” is a mantra often chanted in the direct selling world. It makes sense; getting people to change is hard work, and so starting with new people sounds easier. Here’s the catch, the leader created the team, so it’s likely the new team will eventually turn out just like the current team unless the leader changes first.
Leaders who want the team to grow constantly ask themselves questions to keep growing themselves, because their growth takes the team to the next level. Growth is a result of change. If you are wondering why your team isn’t growing, ask yourself these questions.
- What do I want my team to do that they are not doing now?
- Am I doing what I want them to do?
- How am I modeling the behavior I want them to do?
- What must I change to be the example?
- How badly do I want to change?
- Am I willing to do what it takes to be the role model?
The answers to these questions will lead you to the growth and change required of you, the leader, to help your team grow.
Change isn’t easy, there are many reasons we resist change, probably the biggest one is that we are in the habit of doing what we do now and it feels comfortable.
“People change when they hurt enough that they have to change; learn enough that they want to change; receive enough that they are able to change. The leader must recognize when people are in one of these three stages. In fact, top leaders create an atmosphere that causes one of these three things to occur.”
~John C. Maxwell
Are you hurting, learning or receiving enough to keep changing and growing? What could you do more of to increase your desire to change? Remember, that doing new things is not easy and you will likely have some failures along the way to your new habits. So will your team. A team culture that makes room for mistakes is one that is more conducive to change. Create this culture by frequently sharing your personal stories of change, including your failures on the way to the top!
