How many hours have you spent searching for that perfect gift this past month? As direct sellers, we know you have spent many hours helping others find that perfect present, too. Giving is fun! It makes you feel good and it’s exciting for the receiver. That moment when the package is opened and a smile bursts across a face makes all the effort worthwhile. It warms your hearts. And then it’s over….
What remains for you? Our hope is that the joy that came in the moment is what you will remember. Being in the present, totally engaged as the package is unwrapped, will help you really experience that special emotion. This is easy to say, but just how do you stay in the present when there is so much going on in your heads and around you?
When you find yourself in the future or the past:
- Breathe, deep and slow. Think about your breathing. Close your eyes while you take a few deep breaths. Count your breaths. You will be amazed at how quickly your body and mind will respond and bring you back to the present moment.
- Listen! Really Listen! When you are totally engaged in listening to another person, it’s impossible to be anywhere but in the present.
- Engage your senses. What do you see, hear, feel, touch or smell in this moment? Make a comment about what you sense.
- Pick a trigger in advance (for example, the color red). Practice pulling yourself into the present every time you see red.
One trigger that helps me stay present is this sign at the door to my office.
You have worked hard these past few months, now is your time to be with those you love and enjoy the moments. Be present, it’s the best gift you will give or receive this holiday.
