Your relationship with your direct selling business mirrors a marriage in many ways. You have a passion for your products and your company. You are committed for the long haul. You are emotionally attached to the vision and the people. Just like a marriage, it’s easy to take your eyes off what you fell in love with when the company changes their comp plan, discontinues your best seller or your top producer decides to leave.

When my husband Tom and I wed in our twenties, we had stars in our eyes and a deep infatuation with one other. I would love to say that it’s been that way every day since, however, life has been filled with many ups and downs that took our eyes off those stars. We learned that to stay married and in love requires focus and work. When we veered off the path, we learned to take intentional action. Things like taking a marriage course, going on a romantic vacation and making new rules about turning off the TV. Being aware of when we were drifting off track and taking intentional action to get back on has kept us married and in love for over 38 years.

Staying in love with your business requires the same awareness and determination. How often do you stop and take stock of how you ‘feel’ about your business? Negativity is a slippery devil and can show up unaware. When the shine begins to dim in your love affair with your business, it’s time to take intentional action. Here are five things you can do to fall in love again:

  • Create a list of 100 reasons to be grateful for your company. Push all the way to 100; the final 25 will be the ones that truly touch your heart.
  • Make a list of all the people who have come into your life through your business. Take time to ponder what they have added to your life.
  • Review the income you have earned and make a list of all the things it has provided for your family.
  • Look around your home and notice all the places you find your products. Consider how they make your life and your family’s life better.
  • Make one more list, “How I have grown and changed through my business.”

Take an entire day to appreciate your business. You will remember what caused you to fall in love and how many reasons there are today to renew that affection. You will be renewed and ready to get back to work!
