Be honest now.  Have you ever tried to judge which new team member is going to be your next star? Have you ever thought, “She is never going to get her business off the ground.”  I know I did a lot of judging in my early days.  What I learned is that I was seldom right!

So what is it that builds stars on your team?  I learned this the hard way, and the answer was staring right at me.  You, the leader, are the vision maker.  Everyone wants success; it’s your role to let them know what it takes and how it’s done.

Here are five steps to help you build your expectations:

 1.   Believe in yourself first.

Be confident in your own abilities and expectations. To have expectations of others, you’ll want to have expectations of yourself as well.  Your new team members have to know that what you’re asking them to do, you’ve done yourself. What you believe about yourself influences what you believe about your team, what you expect of them, and how you treat them.

2.    Meet with each new team member one-to-one to share your expectations for them and let them know you believe in them.

People, more often than not, do what they believe they are expected to do.  Be sure your expectations are realistic and achievable.

3.    Believe in all your team members

Your belief is communicated through your tone of voice, body language, expectations, and actions. When you believe in your heart that everyone has a talent for your business, that attitude will come through in everything you do, and your team will believe it too.

4.    INspect what you EXpect

If you set expectations and don’t follow through on them, it’s worse than having no expectations at all. Build-in some form of accountability. Set a time when the new team member can share her results with you and talk about her Action Plan for the week.

5.    Expect Success!

Your goal is to create an environment and attitude where your team’s spirit becomes a desire to achieve. It’s an ongoing process of building the culture of your team. Spend time coaching and sharing your expectations, beliefs, and activities every day! The more they get from you…the more they’ll be engaged and excited about the opportunity you’ve shared with them.

Remember, your EXPECTATIONS are the key to your team’s SUCCESS!
